Seminar E: Introduktion til Samfundsvidenskab

Vi starter jeres første semester og ATU-forløbet med temaet Talent & Akademia. I løbet af semesteret bliver I introduceret til forskellige måder at forstå og arbejde med forskning på – både i forhold til viden, metoder og tilgange. Det overordnede mål for semesteret er, at I får en klar forståelse af, hvordan man arbejder bevidst og målrettet med både sit talent og sin videnskabelige praksis.

Introduktion til Samfundsvidenskab

Samfundsvidenskab spænder bredt - fra business, jura og økonomi til statskundskab, journalistik og sociologi. Her får studerende indsigt i, hvordan erhvervsliv og samfund udvikler sig, og hvordan man kan være med til at forstå og løse de udfordringer, vi står overfor både nationalt og globalt.

På dette introduktionsseminar får du indblik i, hvad der kendetegner samfundsvidenskaben, og hvordan den bidrager til at skabe ny viden om vores komplekse verden. Gennem en række cases fra forskellige fagområder får du mulighed for at se, hvordan forskere og studerende arbejder med alt fra politiske beslutningsprocesser til sociale fællesskaber og økonomiske dynamikker - og hvordan samfundsvidenskaben giver os redskaber til at forstå og forme samfundet.

The European Marriage Pattern
v/Assistent Professor Matthew Curtis, Economic History, SDU
Before modern times, many people in Western Europe married late or not at all. How did this cultural pattern persist, what were its consequences, and why did it end? We will look at historical data and economic theory, and discuss what lessons the past has for modern concerns over falling fertility rates.

Case work: In small break-out groups and then as a whole class, we will discuss if there are lessons from the past to the modern concerns with low fertility today.

A Dead-End Road? A New Era for the Transatlantic Relationship
v/Associate Professor Katarzyna Stoklosa, International and Regional Politics, SDU
Since the end of the Second World War until December 2024, transatlantic relations have provided a basis for peace and stability. From time to time, small crises appeared, as in any relationship. One year after the historically significant US elections, what do transatlantic relations look like? What has happened in the “land of the free” after 80 years of considerable continuity, justice, and the rule of law? Moreover, to what extent do Americans seem disengaged in their attitude toward Europeans, their most faithful and loyal allies in the world?

Case work: We will discuss and analyse two crises that have significantly affected recent transatlantic relations:

• Russia’s war against Ukraine and the perceived weakening of North American support for European security.
• The Greenland issue, focusing on emerging geopolitical imaginaries in the United States.

Segmentation
v/Assistent Professor Sadia Soltani, Business-to-Business Marketing, SDU
The presentation will focus on market segmentation and how companies divide broad markets into distinct customer groups based on characteristics such as demographics, lifestyle, needs, and behavior. The session will introduce the key principles of segmentation and demonstrate how companies use these insights to design targeted marketing strategies. Practical examples will be used to show how effective segmentation supports clearer positioning and communication.

Case work: The students will analyze their favorite brands using segmentation criteria, and in groups develop proposals for targeted marketing strategies.

Seminar E: Introduktion til Samfundsvidenskab har blandt andet til formål, med afsæt i konkrete eksempler på samfundsvidenskabelig forskning, at give jer et indblik i de centrale kendetegn ved samfundsvidenskaben.
