The black hole in the center of our galaxy

Black holes are fascinating objects in fundamental physics. This course will explain what a black hole is, why it is black and how one can find black holes. As a puzzle, we will see whether we can ourselves calculate how heavy the black hole in the center of our own galaxy is, by using observational data from one of 2020's Nobel prize winners in physics.

Further, we discuss a key concept from Einstein's theory of General Relativity, which describes black holes, namely how space and time curve. Very similar curved objects, namely membranes, form the central objects of experimental study in the biophysics lab we will visit and where we see how in physics similar concepts show up in very different areas, namely in the description of space, time and black holes, as well as membranes and cells.
